Relying on Yourself Instead of Receiving Ready-Made Answers

Relying on Yourself Instead of Receiving Ready-Made Answers

You know, doulas do not necessarily give birth to their own children perfectly, and childbirth educators cannot prepare themselves one hundred per cent. A psychotherapist does not have a perfect life, nor a life that is always happy and free of disappointment, pain and fear.

What we do have are tools that we always — and I mean always — test on ourselves. We have knowledge, practical mechanisms and experience from different situations in our own lives and the lives of clients. Yes, we learn together with you and grow together with you. There is no end to that growth because every person is individual, an entire universe inside, and everyone has travelled a unique path before meeting us. This means that the approach to each person is different.

We can provide information, offer direction and ask questions so that you find your own answers and choose your own path. We can support your choice. But we cannot and will not become either an example to copy or a crutch.

I believe that professionals in these fields offer a fishing rod rather than a fish; they help wings grow rather than give someone a hot-air balloon. The second option is always temporary and creates a constant need to return to us. I believe the task is to help a person find inner support, rely on themselves and trust themselves. We do not know what is best for you — in childbirth or in relationships — but we know what may help you find that answer for yourself.
