When a Medical Consultation Matters for Anxiety Symptoms

Psychotherapy alone cannot always address anxiety symptoms. Panic attacks, depressive states, apathy, chronic anxiety and fatigue, and sleep disturbance can have causes that need to be explored with a family doctor.

A doctor may recommend a general medical assessment and decide whether tests are appropriate, including a full blood count and checks such as ferritin, haemoglobin, vitamin D, vitamin B12, cortisol, prolactin and thyroid hormones.

Some chronic conditions can contribute to increased anxiety. You can discuss your symptoms and the appropriate next steps with a family doctor and, when indicated, a psychiatrist or neurologist.
